The Interior Decorator’s Guide to Making the Most of Small Spaces

Your mission, you realise as you look around your new home, is two-fold. Since it is smaller than what you’re used to, you’re going to have to find clever ways around the limited storage options, while also making the flat look bigger than it is. While that’s a tall order (pun intended), giving your small space a larger-than-life makeover is totally doable!

Here are seven low commitment DIYs to max out your compact home—no fuss, no muss!

Here’s what we recommend:

1. Use this Opportunity to De-clutter

Make some room by clearing out the things that you’ve outgrown, fallen out of love with or that is damaged/broken. It’s easy to get intimidated by the prospect of cleaning so we suggest that you force yourself to start with one area and conquer it before moving onto the next bit.

2. Use Strategically Placed Mirrors to Make the Room Look Bigger;

If you’re lucky enough to have a good view, you should place the mirror on a wall opposite a window.

3. Invest in Smart Furniture Pieces.

Think ottomans that can be used as tables, a bookshelf that doubles up as a room divider or a sofa that is also a comfy daybed.

Essentially, you’re trying to make sure that most of your furniture does more than one thing so you can optimise your home for maximum storage and maximum utility.

4. Choose the Right Colours.

Both extremely light and very dark colours work well; eggshell is good and so is steel grey. Other colours that come highly recommended include teal, blush and pearl grey.

Typically, brighter colours tend to be less overwhelming when used in small spaces so let this be an opportunity for you to get the bold statement wall you’ve always wanted.

5. Work in a dash of drama to shift the focus from the size of the room.

Hanging up a large piece of artwork will do the trick. Make sure you hang it slightly above eye-level for the illusion of higher ceilings.

6. Switch out floor lamps for lighting fixtures that can be attached to walls or hung from the ceiling.

This way, you’re saving a bit of floor space where every square inch counts.

7. Make Smart Seating Decisions.

You could choose to install a hanging swing chair or opt for a low sofa or settee, together with cute floor cushions, for a bit of fun.
