Bohemian Style Interior: What Is It and How to Get It Done?

“The Bohemian life is centred around art, music, literature, and political discourse. Furniture is selected for comfort and interest. Objects are collected only as they represent memories, friends, beliefs, etc. Nothing is selected to impress others, only to reflect one's life story and values.”

 – Beverly Solomon, Beverly Solomon Design

Bohemian style is the use of carefree patterns, textures, and colours and something that lacks a well-defined structure. Usually, it is about layering and breaking the rules of conventional design. The style portrays more of personalisation and allows one to showcase their interests.

Bohemian Style Decor - Origin & Basics

The term Bohemianism began in the 19 century in Paris, France. It was inspired by the artists, performers, writers of that time who began to populate lower rents and low-class neighbourhoods in France. These artists found creativity to be more valuable than money. Hence, the style is built on the idea of breaking the standards in design and starts to embrace the unconventional.

The 3 keywords that explain bohemian style are:

1. Personal

It allows styling your space as per your taste, as you can pick and match the items that you intend to style the space with.

2. Relaxed

In this style, you can choose patterns and textures that go well with your personality and taste. Also, it allows one to style their way.

3. No rules

When you style the space the way you like, sometimes it becomes too overwhelming. It is okay to overdo the space as long as you find it aesthetically pleasing. There is no such thing as ‘too much’ when it comes to the Boho design style.

Your Interiors… The Bohemian Way!

Here are the key things critical to getting the perfect Bohemian Interiors for your home.

Colours

When it comes to the Boho interior design style, there is no specific combination of colours. To start with, one can use a base of neutral colours (whites, greys and other warm earthy shades).

To accessorise on the base, vibrant colours like hot pink, fiery orange and saturated purple can be used.

What’s more, you are always free to mix different patterns and textures which may not always match in any other conventional design. Hand-dyed patterns being thrown on the bed duvets and some interesting patterned textiles being layered on solid upholstery on a vintage furniture piece are what you can do. Throwing saturated colours and balancing them with a white backdrop can bring visual balance to space.

Shapes v/s Layers

Bohemian style is not accessorising in different layers. It is rather making different shapes. Using different patterns (hand-made, weaved, dyed fabric) on cushions of the sofa seating can bring an interesting mix to space.

Lighting and Accessories

In a conventional design, the use of ceiling and hanging light is an integral part of it. However, it is the other way round in Bohemian style. To light up the space one can think of using a variety of lanterns, candles, and table lamps.

Along with these, one can even think about using green plants to bring vibrance to the room. This also helps in air purification of the space. To add to the greens, handmade items and souvenirs from travels can be used as accessories.

Furniture

To source bohemian style furniture, one needs to think outside of the regular furniture shop and explore the vintage markets. Markets like flea bazaar, vintage shops, and local-made products can be chosen individually and put together. As one has the liberty to choose individual pieces from different places, when put together,  one has a memory associated with each piece. Usually, the furniture pieces put in the space should portray ‘sit-and-stay-awhile’ feel.
