Expert Tips on How to Use Greenery in Home Interior Design

By: Lavanya Chopra

Timeless, budget-friendly, and a boon for the indoors, greenery in home interior design is an element we can never get enough of! Strategically including plants in our homes has proved to impact one’s sense of well-being and productivity positively. In addition, they give spaces new life that lasts through seasons and is an impactful design element!

Read on to learn hacks our expert Interior Designers swear by when it comes to effectively including greenery in design schemes. These ideas make for long-lasting and affordable design investments, sprucing spaces with a zing of life!

1. Creating Soft Focal Points

With home interior design, the most viable way to make a statement is through intentional focal points in various areas of the residence. Explore plants that have a sculptural presence, leveraging their aspects of colour, scale, and silhouettes to elevate the look of multiple spots. Surfaces like consoles, bookshelves, coffee tables, bar carts, and nightstands make for interesting areas to display focal green features.

2. Experimental Display

Here is a hack with which one can get really creative! Placing plants in various planters can heighten the look and feel of spaces. Depending on the home’s design, explore planters made of cement, terracotta, FRP, ceramic, etc. The choice of materials and scale of the planters can make for a beautiful plant cluster/display in indoor and outdoor areas. Wall and ceiling-suspended planters are a great way to draw attention to the volume of spaces.

3. Plant-Filled Outdoor Nooks

If your homes have access to balconies, verandas, or quaint garden spaces, make the most of it by creating an alfresco sanctuary! This can provide an opportunity to disconnect and feel close to nature in a grounded manner. A few well-placed plants in statement planters, outdoor-grade furniture, textured natural fibre rugs, and dreamy lights/lanterns can instantly transform the space! One can also consider succulent patches and terrariums that are easy to maintain.

4. Go Vertical

If space and square footage are a constraint in your home, consider going vertical! A green wall or a vertical herb wall are simple yet functional ways of introducing greenery in homes. These can be positioned in mildly sunny spots in balconies, utility areas, or kitchen walls with simple mesh/wall-supported frameworks. Green walls in outdoor spaces can be irrigated with an automated drip irrigation system readily available in the market. Herb walls can yield varieties like basil, cilantro, microgreens, and parsley within the comfort of your home!

5. Plants as Lively Decor

Greenery and plants can pose as stunning decor pieces if tended to with care. Position them in communal living/dining areas, bedrooms, and home offices to enliven these spaces. Varieties such as the ZZ Plant, Pothos, Areca Palm, and Ferns are great options for our tropical climate. Make sure to research the locally available plant varieties and their care regimens at your local nurseries. Each plant requires varying hydration levels, light, and space to grow.

Your Green Sanctuary Beckons

Greenery in homes is sure to be a game-changer! It doesn’t take a green thumb to nurture them if you pick ideal varieties to suit your space. With their presence, one’s home is sure to feel like a tranquil sanctuary of peace and freshness. All it takes are a few simple green-loving design ideas!
