Zen Mode On: How to Turn Your Home Office into an Oasis of Calm

Work-from-home, but in peace.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced us all to retreat into our homes and stay there; we find ourselves faced with no option but to work remotely. If you’re not used to this setup, it may seem exhausting at first. Hours tend to meld into each other, and setting boundaries is that much harder. If you find yourself struggling to concentrate, the trick to greater efficiency (and happiness) could lie in improving your workspace.

10 Ways To Revitalize Your Home Office

Ahead, we list out 10 simple ways to tweak your home office so that it becomes an oasis of peace and calm. We hope that wherever you are right now, you’re safe and well. In the meantime, here’s how to make work-from-home work for you

#1. Choose the right fabrics. Busy patterns can compete for your attention, while soft, soothing styles will make it easier to focus. That doesn’t mean you have to be boring! Have fun with smaller patterns, like herringbone or stripes, in calming colours. These include powder blue, taupe, mocha, blush, peach, pale green or rose.

#2. Choose storage options that help you de-clutter; there’s nothing more distracting than a messy desk!

#3. Natural light is always preferable to artificial light; a simple way to ensure your workspace is filled with it is to hang up sheer curtains.

#4. A little aromatherapy can calm your frazzled nerves. If you have scented candles or a diffuser and some essential oils handy, that’s a great way to get started; citrus-y scents are extremely refreshing.

#5. If you can, block out some breathing space in your home office. This is basically your ‘break room’; some nice floor cushions, a few potted plants and a kettle of tea are all you need to recharge before your next work call.

#6. Make sure you hide unsightly cords and wires.

#7. Inspire yourself! Hang up quotes that move you or get yourself a vision board to remind yourself of your goals. You can also outline and frame your vision and mission, and hang them up to serve as a daily dose of motivation.

#8. Set up a snack cupboard and make sure it’s always full of good-for-you, healthy bites so you can refuel during the day.

#9. If you’ve got some extra room, large plants can really transform your office.

#10. Treat yourself! If you like nice stationery, make sure your home office is always stocked. If you love tea, assign yourself a nice set of cups and a collection of flavoured teas. If you enjoy working with music on, set up a snazzy set of speakers. Basically, this is where you get to have a bit of fun and infuse some personality into the room. At the end of the day, it should be a place you love coming back to—again and again.
